Toor dal – 1 cup
Onion – 1 medium, chopped
Tomato – 1 medium, chopped
Green chilies – 1–2
Ginger-garlic paste – 1 tsp
Turmeric – ¼ tsp
Red chili powder – 1 tsp
Cumin – 1 tsp
Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
Dry red chili – 1
Curry leaves – few
Ghee/oil – 2 tbsp
Coriander leaves – for garnish
Salt – to taste
Execution
1. Cook the Dal
Wash and pressure cook toor dal with turmeric + 2.5 cups water.
Cook for 3–4 whistles until soft.
Mash lightly and keep aside.
2. Prepare the Tadka
Heat ghee/oil.
Add mustard, cumin, dry red chili, curry leaves.
Add onions → sauté till light brown.
Add ginger-garlic → fry till aroma.
Add tomatoes → cook till soft.
Add red chili powder + salt → mix well.
3. Combine
Add cooked dal to the tadka.
Adjust water, simmer 5 minutes.
Finish with coriander leaves & a spoon of ghee.
4. Serve
Perfect with roti, rice, jeera rice, or ghee rice.
Additional tips
- For restaurant-style flavor, add a small pinch of kasuri methi at the end.
- Always add ghee as a final topping—it boosts aroma instantly.
- Mix a little moong dal with toor dal for a smoother texture.
