Ingredients

  • Ingredients

    • Toor dal – 1 cup

    • Onion – 1 medium, chopped

    • Tomato – 1 medium, chopped

    • Green chilies – 1–2

    • Ginger-garlic paste – 1 tsp

    • Turmeric – ¼ tsp

    • Red chili powder – 1 tsp

    • Cumin – 1 tsp

    • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp

    • Dry red chili – 1

    • Curry leaves – few

    • Ghee/oil – 2 tbsp

    • Coriander leaves – for garnish

    • Salt – to taste

Execution

1. Cook the Dal

  • Wash and pressure cook toor dal with turmeric + 2.5 cups water.

  • Cook for 3–4 whistles until soft.

  • Mash lightly and keep aside.

2. Prepare the Tadka

  • Heat ghee/oil.

  • Add mustard, cumin, dry red chili, curry leaves.

  • Add onions → sauté till light brown.

  • Add ginger-garlic → fry till aroma.

  • Add tomatoes → cook till soft.

  • Add red chili powder + salt → mix well.

3. Combine

  • Add cooked dal to the tadka.

  • Adjust water, simmer 5 minutes.

  • Finish with coriander leaves & a spoon of ghee.

4. Serve

  • Perfect with roti, rice, jeera rice, or ghee rice.

Additional tips

  • For restaurant-style flavor, add a small pinch of kasuri methi at the end.
  • Always add ghee as a final topping—it boosts aroma instantly.
  • Mix a little moong dal with toor dal for a smoother texture.
